Pie, the breakfast of champions. What? It has fruit in it – chunks and chunks of healthy bananas. They just happen to be completely enveloped in caramel and sweet whipped cream. We hit uber-hipster Echo Park diner Brite Spot after a whirlwind night of free music at Echo Park Rising (a success by all accounts), and while we dove into our egg white-veggie scramble and whole wheat toast, that banana cream pie called our name from the dessert case. Loudly. We had no choice, really.

Last year a collective of shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and live music venues in the Los Angeles community of Echo Park joined in the 11th hour to salvage the seminal music festival formerly known as Sunset Junction. In just 72 hours the business collective was able to offer members of the community a variety of live music. On the strength of last year’s unexpected success, this year more than 65 businesses and nonprofit organizations came together to launch a festival now known as Echo Park Rising.

Featuring more than 60 bands, performers, comedians, and DJs performing within the formerly disparate businesses and shops, the inaugural Echo Park Rising festival offered something for fans of all stripes on Aug. 25. The main stage, located at Taix French Restaurant, formed the perfect venue for the evening’s highly anticipated headliner, Los Angeles-based indie pop/rock quintet Youngblood Hawke. Youngblood Hawke came to life after multi-instrumentalist Simon Katz and vocalist Sam Martin’s previous project, Iglu & Hartly, disbanded, much like Echo Park Rising was borne of Sunset Junction’s fall.

As the band took the stage with the downtown L.A. cityscape as a magnificent backdrop, they were full of confidence and infectious energy and opened their set with “Rootless.” Given the warm temperatures in L.A. this night, the opening lyrics set the tone perfectly as they sang, “The world is feeling warmer.” Each band member danced with his/her respective instrument as they weaved around the stage. Youngblood Hawke’s performance was full of modern indie panache and timeless arena-ready bombast, a rare combination.

In essence, it is their balance between intriguing, irresistible songwriting and an explosive presence that makes this local quintet so undeniable. The interplay between band members, each of whom played a key role, was also intriguing to watch. It never seemed that all of the focus was on Martin as all members seemed to feed off each other’s energy. Together, they created up-tempo rock that was danceable while remaining emotionally fun and interesting.

The band’s set continued to take the audience through tracks off their recently released self-titled EP, including their current single, “We Come Running,” which garnered the most cheers from the fans, all of whom sang along during the chorus. Fueled by shimmering synth sounds, elegant acoustic guitar and an uplifting and unified chant, the song is a propulsive and potent alternative pop call-to-arms that serves as a fitting introduction to the band’s enigmatic and entrancing style.

Set List:
“Rootless”
“Dannyboy”
“In Our Blood”
“Come Looking”
“Protect Yourself”
“We Come Running”
“Forever”
“Glacier”
Echo Park rose on Saturday. And rose. And rose. And rose.

The first serious Echo Park Rising neighborhood festival (last year’s last-minute affair did not have nearly the scope or the musical range of this year’s) was by most accounts a huge success. More than 100 musical artists, almost all local, played, and big crowds roamed Sunset Boulevard and nearby avenues to take in performances at venues big and small. Overall, the day (on the same weekend once occupied by Sunset Junction) had a very South by Southwest vibe (for those who’ve been to the annual festival in Austin), except without the badges and tickets. The outdoor stage at Taix — headlined by Fool’s Gold (that’s guitarist Lewis Pesacov, top photo) — had robust crowds all day, as did the Buzz Bands LA Stage in Taix’s Champagne Room, where 10 bands played on the hour starting at 2 p.m., ending with a “nightcap set”/dance party by Youngblood Hawke. Whew.

Fool’s Gold At Echo Park Rising, Saturday August 25th 2012
Written by Alyson Camus

Fool’s Gold was closing the night of this Echo Park Rising on the Taix Restaurant’s outdoor stage, although many other bands still played past 11 pm at the numerous locations spread along Sunset Boulevard. If you have never heard Fool’s Gold, the first thing you would notice are the omnipresent African guitars and the restless beats, and you may think, do we need another pair of white guys – I am talking about the two founders of the band, vocalist and bassist Luke Top guitarist and Lewis Pesacov – playing African music?

But Fool’s Gold is much more than a Graceland cover band even though the comparison with the likes of Vampire Weekend will undoubtedly cross your mind. It was different, it was Vampire Weekend without the hipster factor and fashionable filter, the quintet sounded closer to the original and their compositions much more hybrid, while exploring music from diverse ethnic origins. With drums and percussions, a bass, two guitars, a synth, even a saxo and Top’s aching vocals, they made the crowd dance to their smooth and hypnotic rhythms, which were going from Afro-beats to more Arabic-inspired influences.

It was an original and rich cocktail, with some authentic South-African bright lead-guitar starting the song and carrying the melody with a high-pitched sound just before the peppy drumbeats would kick, or some almost krautrock-ish moments with a languishing saxo and a tribal drumming digging some interesting grooves. But it was mostly upbeat and buoyant, and so bouncy, like their ‘Surprise Hotel’ or ‘Bark and Bite’ songs, that people were dancing and jumping non-stop during their set. But other songs like ‘Nadine’ exuded something else than just the joyous African rhythms, as they were into more repetitive sonic mantra borrowed from Muslim music.

I guess they would be in the world music section in a store, but what does it mean at the end? Actually, there were many layers under the obvious African one, the song ‘The Dive’ for example, off their last album ‘Leave No Trace’ had some reminiscence of the Smiths, and I am sure I could drop many other band names, so things were not that simple. They closed with a song beginning with an almost a cappella throbbing chant, that could have been the peace song of some lost tribe. And even though some lyrics were sung in Hebrew (yes Hebrew) every person in the crowd was understanding every beat with his or her own body.

Could this be the next big festival in the city? Echo Park Rising was a great success with every venue from Origami Vinyl, Stories Books & Cafe, to the TAIX main stage just packed with people eager for some good times. We felt nothing but good vibes throughout the day! I personally wasn’t familiar with most of the bands that performed and was pleasantly surprised with how much new good music I went home with.

A number of booths were stationed at Echoplex supervised by representatives of record labels, local bookstores, and such who sold goodies like gorgeous gig posters, t-shirts, zines, and even graphic novels. Some businesses had one-day promos for patrons of the event like Pazzo Gelato who offered $1 gelato scoops all day long. The whole neighborhood was populated with some of our favorite food trucks as well like Cool Haus who served ice cream sandwiches well until 9pm. It’s amazing how the event brought the neighborhood together, getting virtually every Echo Park establishment to open their doors for everyone throughout the event.

It was undoubtedly a wonderful Saturday that ought to be repeated again and again! Great music, great food, great people – all in one great neighborhood. What more could you possibly ask for?

Were you there? What did you think? Who were your favorites?

P.S. I’m really glad to have discovered these wonderful local bands who have yet to be heard by the audience that they deserve. I will try to feature some of them on this site soon!

This is the thing with a massive event like Echo Park Rising, there are more than 100 bands playing in the neighborhood at many different locations and you don’t know whom to begin with, so you end up with the already familiar and the obvious: Manhattan Murder Mystery was playing at the Echo in the middle of the afternoon, and this is where I started the festival. Anyway it was a good choice, because when you think about rising hell at any place, the disheveled band and its raucous sound are totally fitting.

I remember some people leaving some comments on this website not long ago, wondering why this band isn’t more talked about, and I totally agree. Every Manhattan Murder Mystery show I have attended has been some epic episode of chaos, with poignant melodies buried in loudness. The songs are brutal and surge at you while grasping you by the guts, the music is loud and fuzzy, the lyrics shouted with rage and anguish, and soon everyone is intensely into it, rising arms and fists in the air while thinking about drinking himself into oblivion. It is always difficult to listen to the tragic-trailer-trash stories of the songs through this dense wall of loud music, but it doesn’t really matter as everyone seem to know them already,…

Actually it was not exactly the case for me this time, there were a lot of new songs that I had not heard before! They started with the rather mournful ‘Sancho’ off their latest release ‘Women House’, which had this line, heartbreaking to the core like any other line from any other MMM’s song, ‘Oh, you used to lie in bed with me/Now I don’t lie in bed with anybody’, and they continued with new-to-me songs, like ‘Bad Luck Blues’, ‘Bathroom song’? But I am not entirely sure as I couldn’t read the writing on the setlist very well.

Matthew Teardrop was wearing his habitual backpack-hoodie-bandana uniform, but there was another guitarist playing with the usual trio and he was adding to the songs layers I hadn’t paid attention to before. At four, they built an amazing blustering sound, with long instrumental moments turning into a violent punk-psychedelia, alternating with spitting-out lyrics and fast military-style drumming – Teardrop used to wear a military helmet, so it is not surprising. At one point, Teardrop was so happy that he threw his bandana to the crowd, a totally curious move for a guy who writes Bukowski-style lyrics, but it may have been more an accident than him suddenly turning into Elvis Presley.

As he had done it so many times before, Teardrop jumped in the crowd at the end of the last song ‘Parking Lot’, finishing it in the middle of people, away from the spotlight of the stage. But it is exactly where his visceral music belongs, all the raw emotions have to be fired in the dark in a cathartic ending.

The festival formed quickly after last year’s Sunset Junction was canceled. This year, it takes a local focus with bands including No and Youngblood Hawke.

August 24, 2012|By August Brown, Los Angeles Times

When last year’s Sunset Junction festival in Silver Lake fell apart because of long-standing permit troubles, several nightclubs and business owners in neighboring Echo Park cobbled a last-minute replacement event that they called Echo Park Rising. This year, they had the luxury of actually planning for the fest.

“It has been easier this year,” said Liz Garo, the talent buyer for the Echo and Echoplex, who helped organize the event. “Last year, we threw it together and the next thing we knew it was actually happening. But we’d always said we should do something like this, and it was just the kick we needed.”

For its second year, Echo Park Rising splays out over dozens of neighborhood businesses, corralling many of the best bands in the area’s club circuit along with a bevy of restaurant and booze deals. It’s a showcase of L.A.’s best neighborhood for rock music, and catches Echo Park at a moment of genuine mixed-culture appeal.

As a new festival project from Garo and Origami Vinyl owner Neil Schield, it’s no surprise that the event skims the best of the local club-residency gantlet. Bands like No, Youngblood Hawke, Hands and HOTT MT are among the headliners, and they actually reflect a shift in mission from 2011′s madcap assemblage.

Last year, many of the bands were national acts scrambling for shows in Junction’s wake. This year’s free, locals-only lineup better reflects what Garo had in mind all along.

“For me, I like it local and neighborhood-y, and there’s always enough acts here that are just about to break out,” she said. “Ninety-nine percent of the bands are playing for free because they love the neighborhood and have connections to it.”

The centerpiece of the fest is an outdoor stage in the parking lot of the local French restaurant-institution Taix, and organizers expect 2,000 to 3,000 people over the course of the day. But there’s lots of nonmusic appeal as well. Most of the myriad bars, restaurants and galleries along Sunset Boulevard will have art shows and drink specials, and the Echoplex will host zine-making workshops and a book and record fair.

In a lot of ways, the neighborhood today evokes the environment that prompted the original Sunset Junction — a historically Latino enclave rapidly infusing with artist types and their businesses, sometimes uneasily. But as the early incarnation of Junction proved, a free festival can highlight a blended neighborhood’s appeal.

“It was never meant to be just a music thing,” Garo said. “It really is a celebration of Echo Park in general.”

The streets, stores and parking lots of Echo Park were filled on Saturday with music and youthful music lovers who descended on the neighborhood for Echo Park Rising, the music festival that sprung up last year after the Sunset Junction street fair was abruptly cancelled after the city refused to issue the required permits. The parking lot next to Taix restaurant served as a the main outdoor stage, where Dante Vs Zombies (shown above) played some retro classics and original pieces.

The sidewalks along Sunset Boulevard were busy late into the evening with festival goers hopping from bars and restaurants and listening to impromptu street corner performances. Unlike the Sunset Junction festival, which attracted a lot of community opposition for blocking of Sunset Boulevard, Echo Park streets remained opened during Saturday’s day-long event.

Heavy Metal and cult culture fill your head with so many visions and ideas. They make your soul glow with the unholy light and create sensations to the senses. But still they leave your stomach empty and sad. Take heed heshers: Grill ‘Em All is here to fill the void that music and mayhem can not. Enter the realm of the burger.

Grill ‘Em All is steadfast in the belief that the heavy metal and culinary worlds were bound to collide one day in a victorious marriage of massive meat and riffage. Where better for this battle to commence than in the city of fallen angels? Los Angeles, your cries in the night have been answered. Cry no more!

Grill ‘Em All is led into the burger battle by the team of Chef Ryan Harkins and Matthew Chernus. The two have been allies and band mates for over twenty years. Ryan has paid his dues as a veteran of professional kitchens for over a decade strong, having worked in Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio. The combination of his fine dining background and strong Midwestern roots has left him with the desire to place a gourmet take on his first love, the hamburger. Dare to stop him! Matthew, also beckoned as the Future of America, is an ex-professional wrestler and he owns a megaphone. Need I say more on his behalf? I dare not in fear of being Liger Bombed through a barbed wire board with black widows and broken forties of King Cobra beneath.

Together they are ready to turn the key, they are ready to hit the streets, and they are ready to… GRILL ‘EM ALL!

Georges Greek Truck is the 1st Greek Food Truck to serve delicious and healthy food in Southern California. This gyro truck that has become a instant favorite by food truck hunters alike is the brain child of the owners of Georges Greek Cafe La which have been serving Greek food in the heart of Los Angeles for over a decade. Located in the historic Businesses district of Downtown LA, George’s Greek Cafe LA grew through time and with great tales of love and chaos that accompany a family operated restaurant, especially those that are inspired by a passion for food and people.

The Bun Truck is a gourmet food truck in the Los Angeles-area serving Korean-Mediterranean Fusion. The name is derived from our popular steamed buns and Korean BBQ gyros. Our Chef, James Seok, was trained at the prestigious New York Culinary Institute and has recently worked at New York City’s famed Morimoto Restaurant. What originally started out as an idea between two friends who grew up in the Motor City, has now turned into a full-fledged venture. The Bun Truck represents where we come from, and where we are today. The no-nonsense, gritty city of Detroit we represent, and the sunny, laid-back city of Los Angeles we’ve come to love. Please come try any of our Spicy Pork Gyros, Donkatsu Steamed buns, and Fried Tempura Fries. Our food is cooked to order and made to perfection using the freshest of ingredients and finest of flavors.

We look forward to serving you!

*Cool Haus near Taix Outdoor Stage*

WHAT IS COOLHAUS?OUR STORYHOW IT ALL HAPPENS
COOLHAUS is a triple entendre – a play on three of our favorites:

[1] Bauhaus, an influential modernist design movement of the 1920′s and 30′s.

[2] Rem Koolhaas, the famous Dutch Architect and Theorist who challenged the mantra “Form follows function”

[3] “Cool house,” isn’t that what you’re eating – an ice cream sandwich deconstructed into a cookie roof and floor slab with ice cream walls?
Natasha and Freya started baking cookies and making ice cream in Freya’s mom’s kitchen in the Fall of 2008. They named the flavor combinations after architects and architectural movements they were inspired by and started experimenting with recipes and testing them on friends. It seemed like a fun art project with “farchitecture” in mind ie food + architecture.

One day it occurred to Freya and Natasha that an ice cream truck would be a perfect way to disseminate their ice cream sandwiches (and architecture dialogue) around the city of LA. The truck would be a nod to the past tradition of the Good Humor man selling ice cream novelties around neighborhoods, but with a modern twist – not to mention the long-withstanding popularity of taco trucks around LA and the rapidly growing infatuation with “gourmet” food trucks. The timing seemed perfect, now all Freya and Natasha needed was a truck!

They found a postal truck on Craigslist and were able to afford it with money they had saved from their other jobs. They prepared the truck and their product for their launch at Coachella Valley Music Festival in April of 2009 where the product was very well received – and when they came back to LA, they had generated a strong buzz and following.

Today, they have a fleet of 4 trucks in LA, 2 trucks and 1 cart in NY, 2 trucks in Austin, 2 trucks in Miami, a newly launched storefront in Culver City, CA and even have their ice cream sandwiches at Southern California Whole Foods Markets. They hope to continue to expand to other cities nationally, and maybe even globally (doesn’t hurt to dream, right?)!

We are often told to make the most of each day, but VOXHAUL BROADCAST took this mantra to the extreme. Originally from Orange County, CA, the quartet recorded and mixed their 2008 debut EP Rotten Apples live. In one day. The result harnessed a sound that reflects a range of influences from James Brown and Al Green to The Beatles and Donovan.

VB followed up Rotten Apples with a promo-only EP, Fact Fiction and Turquoise in 2009 and after a move to Silver Lake, VOXHAUL BROADCAST are now the fastest rising band in LA.

They currently have 6 songs in rotation on US & UK radio and will be touring all summer to build steam for the release of their appropriately titled upcoming debut full-length, Timing Is Everything. Produced by Grammy Award winning producer Tom Biller (Silver Sun Pickups, Seawolf, Liars) with additional production from Chris Thorne (Blind Melon), Timing Is
Everything showcases a growth in songwriting and pristine production while still holding on to the band’s trademark blend of r&b, rock and soul.

LA Times Magazine’s June 2010 “Music Issue” recently picked Voxhaul Broadcast as one of LA’s ‘Best New Indie Bands’ by ultimate tastemaker Nic Harcourt. Nic was the first to put VB on air on his Sunday KCRW show, and over the past six months has kept eight different tracks in rotation. In July 2010, VOXHAUL BROADCAST was featured on KCRW’s influential radio program “Morning Becomes Eclectic,” a program recognized nationally as a primary outlet for promoting a wide range of music ahead of the curve.

Jason Bentley, KCRW Music Director and host of “Morning Becomes Eclectic” said of the appearance, “We are all very excited about this up and coming local band. The audience response to their performance on ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ has been outstanding. It’s a rare and special pleasure to be part of a formative moment in a band’s career. We’ve been playing their various EPs and we’re confident that whatever sound and style they pursue on their
debut full length will bring them success.”

VOXHAUL BROADCAST tunes are also making their way across the pond, spending 7 weeks on the UK’s NME Radio playlist with the track “Fact or Fiction” at the end of 2009. Chris Martin from NME Radio declared, “I f***ing love this track (‘Fact or Fiction’) by Voxhaul Broadcast. Someone sign them!”

VOXHAUL BROADCAST has showcased at SXSW, CMJ, Sundance, Noisepop Pop Fest in San Francisco, been featured on DAYTROTTER (w/ a second session booked for later this summer)and won the title of ‘Best Indie Band’ at Milwaukee’s Summerfest. They recently headlined KCRW’s “I LIKE TO ROCK” showcase at the Hammer Museum in LA and have been confirmed as an early-announced artist for FILTER Magazine’s Culture Collide Festival in October.

Amidst the blood, cocaine, and Botox soaked tapestry of Los Angeles, the members of Batwings Catwings hail from all over the US and converge upon the wasteland of Southern California to give those who are willing a reason to shake and sweat.

Batwings Catwings is fronted by the tiny, yet fierce dance commander Dana Poblete, an everygirl with the ability to entrance audiences from Los Angeles to the hell mouths of Mexico’s border towns with her frenetic energy and deceptively powerful howl. Backing her is guitarist Ray Santillan, a master of the squelch who wields his axe and sequencers with the devastating accuracy. On the drums is L.A. blogger Clay Johnson, who cut his teeth drumming for about every metal band on the northern Midwest’s arctic front. Josh Crampton rounds out the lineup on bass, diversifying the sound even further with his smoothness and shoegaze influences.

After their successful first EP “Peacock Collection” from earlier in 2011 and a bangin official showcase at SXSW they are primed for another release October 24, 2011 on Gravy Records out of the UK. It will be their first 7″, which is named “Radio”. They recorded again at L.A.’s hot spot Infrasonic Studios (No Age, Best Coast, Fools Gold, Abe Vigoda, Wavves) by Eric Nordhauser and Pete Lyman. With a tinge of sarcasm, they are self-proclaimed as “modernist punk” – noisy as hell with a angle of pop and a nod to the punk rock roots of the L.A. underground bands they love so much.

<a href="http://tsandthepasthaunts.com/"_blank">TS & the Past Haunts || Listen || Watch
Formed out of the demise of Boston indie/punk rock royalty, TS & The Past Haunts came to be through mutual friends sharing common interests. Travis Shettel (TS/Totally Travis), guitarist, singer and ring-leader of the band Piebald, met The Duke Spirit (Shangri-La Records) when he was invited to take on tour manager duties for the band during one of their first US tours. Acting as a US Ambassador-of-sorts for the band, a friendship was formed and The Duke Spirit soon learned of Travis’ musical past. After asking TS to join them both on the road and in the studio playing keys and percussion, it would only be a matter of time before they would return the favor. Travis and The Duke Spirit knuckled down in between their tours of Australia and the UK and recorded a handful of his songs; learning, writing and recording along the way.

Since the Dukes have their own schedules full with… well, The Duke Spirit, Travis wanted an outlet to perform the songs live. The recordings with The Dukes were a catalyst for the formation of a true band. He found his rhythm section in Ben (drums) and Heather (bass) Heywood, a married duo who front bands of their own (Summer Darling and Kissing Cousins, respectively). The power trio version of TS & THE PAST HAUNTS has been busy; playing shows and writing songs. In the very near future, they will be heading north to Sacramento to record a full length album with Robert Cheek at the tape-op darling studio, The Hangar. They plan to record live to capture the energy and rawness of their live performances. The new batch of songs are energized blasts of dark rock that still maintain pop sensibilities
